Botox and Fillers Q&A

How does Botox work?

Botox® is delivered by direct injection into the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and furrows. The injectable weakens or paralyzes these muscles or blocks specific nerves, meaning your fine lines and wrinkles show less. Injection sites can be numbed with ice packs or an anesthetic cream but generally require no anesthetic.

Your Cornforth Gynecology and Medspa provider may recommend supplemental treatments using dermal fillers, which are gel-like substances injected under the skin, to create a smoother or fuller appearance.

How can Botox and fillers benefit me?

Botox relaxes dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements like squinting and frowning, whereas dermal fillers smooth out the static wrinkles visible even when the face is at rest. Fillers can also increase fullness, restore the lost volume of lips, chin, and cheeks, and correct under-eye hollows.

Botox is FDA approved for use in individuals 22 years and older for the temporary improvement in the appearance of one or several types of facial lines, including forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

Specifically, Juvederm® is FDA approved for people 21 years and older for minimizing moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and skin folds.

What are fillers made of?

Dermal fillers can include the following materials:

Hyaluronic acid - A sugar that is naturally found in the body,

Calcium hydroxyapatite -  A mineral and also a major component of bone.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) - A biodegradable and synthetic material.

Fillers are temporary because they are made from materials that the body eventually breaks down and absorbs.

What can I expect from botox and filler sessions?

Botox sessions are typically 20 minutes, and results can be seen as soon as 48 hours. Maintenance is recommended every 2-3 months.

A fillers session typically lasts 20 minutes. 3-5 sessions are recommended for optimal results, with maintenance occurring every 9-12 months.

Most side effects are minimal and might include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
